3.A03 Metalsmithing Throughout Time

3.A03 Metalsmithing Throughout Time At MIT, every student has an advisor in fact, throughout their time here, every student will have multiple advisors! It starts in freshman year with our first-year advisors; once you declare your major, you get a major-specific advisor (or two if you double major :0). I like that at MIT, unlike some other schools, youre required to meet with your advisor at the beginning of the semester and have them approve your course selections, so that you can introduce yourself, get acquainted, and check in. In freshman year, you can choose between either traditional advising (where you and your advisor meet one-on-one occasionally to chat) or an advising seminar. (There also used to be RBA/residence-based advising, where a group of people living in the same place would all have the same advisor, but this doesnt exist anymore.) This post will mostly be about advising seminars, because I am in one and I like it a lot! The idea is that before the school year starts, they publish a whole long list of advising seminars you can sign up for. The seminars last one semester, like a class,01 Technically, theyre 6 credits, or half a class, but I would not say theyre really 6 credits of work. and have titles like Designing Consumer Electronics or Geek Book Club or Prosody: The Music of Language there are so many that it takes two webpages to list them all. You rank a shortlist and right before school starts, everyone who opted in is assigned to a seminar and an advisor! Each seminar counts for 6 units, so approximately one half of a typical class (theoretically 6 hours a week). Some people stick with traditional advising because dont want to take an extra class, or theyre already at the freshman credit limit, or probably tons of other reasons I dont know about, and thats chill. I opted for an advising seminar because I like learning cool stuff but also because I thought it wouldnt be a bad idea to have an adult checking in with me every week, and to know I had someone to talk to if something went wrong. So far, I am LOVING it. You guys every week, we go down to the forge,02 Can you believe MIT has a forge?!? we take metal we hit it really hard we make it pretty its so so cool. Our first project was making a chain link. I turned this: into this: We could pretty much do whatever we wanted to the metal; the only requirements were, essentially, that we use our creativity. I thought it would be cool to have a sky-type thing, with some darkening or pattern at the top, and then constellations with light shining through them. I stamped stars in the metal using a metal stamp03 Weird how the name isnt related at all to the action, I know :P and a hammer, and used a drill press (for the first time!!) to make starter holes for the constellation lines. That brought me to this: I extended each hole into a line using a jewellers saw and then much, much, much hammering occurred. In order to facilitate roundedness, I got the curvature started on a bag of sand, then used a ring mandrill with a long cylindrical prong to get a perfect circle. Once that was finished, I soldered the ring together using an acetylene torch!! It was very different, and a lot more difficult, than the circuits I soldered with my dad as a kid (the solder was much more temperamental). Lastly, because heating up metal makes it look wayyyy weirder than you would expect (see later photos), it was time for polishing. And the final product was shiny as heck!! An arrow pointing right Previous An arrow pointing right Next I really like the feeling of accomplishment that comes when you create something with your hands.  This is my baby! I brought it into the world! Look how beautiful it is!  Plus, I know how much I learned along the way, and its exciting to think of all the future projects I could use that knowledge for. In terms of advising, I think I was right when I made my choice: it is nice to have someone checking in with me each week. I know people who claim that faculty advisors are useless, because upperclassmen are the ones who know whats really going on on campus; to me, it seems like they serve very different purposes. When I want to know if a class is well-taught, or what its 3-hour lab section is like in person, or just how much mathematical maturity I need to take it yes, I would ask an upperclassman (and I love that MITs mixed-year housing makes this so easy). But my advisor is the one who can tell me, Ive seen years of students make that choice and none of them regretted it, or the department actually doesnt want to freshmen to do that and heres why, and who can give me the perspective of life after college. I think thats really valuable, and Im glad that MIT makes it so easy for us to have access to mentoring in this way. Also, Im making a cup. Im making a cup!!! Please regard these lovely pictures of my cup (well I wouldnt be too offended if someone called it a small bowl) coming into existence: An arrow pointing right Previous An arrow pointing right Next The main trick to forming the shape: hit it with a cross peen hammer rather than the ball peen I mistakenly started with. The ball peen distributes force evenly, whereas the cross peen only sends force along its edges, lengthening the metal more in that direction. Its amazing to see the metal move, especially right after its been heated up to ductility, when you hit it with even a small cross peen. The added pattern is done with a small hammer and called chase and repoussé; the added colours are glass enameling, which you spread on in a powder and then heat to melt into glass. Its aesthetic, but also makes my cup/bowl-thing food safe! I plan to fill it with much almond milk ^-^ Next up: a steel trivet for my cup! Weve only worked with copper so far, so Im excited to learn how to work this much harder metal. Post Tagged #advising #metalsmithing Technically, they're 6 credits, or half a class, but I would not say they're really 6 credits of work. back to text ? Can you believe MIT has a forge?!? back to text ? Weird how the name isn't related at all to the action, I know :P back to text ?

Basic Guidelines for Nutrition Essay - 2872 Words

Almost everyone I know thinks that nutrition advice is confusing and contradictory. Those that don’t think so are just not interested in the advice and so ignore it. Students come to class every week with questions about whether they need to take fish oil caplets, drink lots of milk and stock up on pomegranate juice. My answer is usually that the evidence is contradictory. The truth is that â€Å"basic† nutrition guidelines are not confusing and haven’t changed much in thirty years. What you need to eat is lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. You need a balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fats and you need plenty of fluids, the best of which is water. What you should avoid is food with saturated and trans†¦show more content†¦Preliminary results, however, often do not hold up. Sometimes results are pushed by food and supplement manufacturers trying to increase their market share and profit margins. Convincing you that their products are good for you encourages you to buy them and thus makes good business sense. Companies constantly develop, look for and present evidence, even if it is shaky, to bolster their health claims. So what is a person to do? You could stick to the â€Å"basic† nutrition advice and ignore the media and corporate hype about new developments. No doubt, however, you will start to get curious about the new vitamin drink that your friends say will improve your tennis game. Or you will wonder if the new wheat grass diet will really make losing that extra five pounds you picked up during fall semester effortless. What you need to evaluate claims is a critical and somewhat cynical approach (think it’s all about money) and some idea about the pitfalls of even the best nutrition research. Nutrition information comes from many different kinds of studies, each of which has advantages and disadvantages. Epidemiological studies provide broad information about populations. For these studies, researchers look at diseases and diet for a large group of people and sees what patterns appear. How to Ask Politely Where the Bathroom Is in French

Ah la la, this is always a difficult question. Because on top of possibly sounding impolite in French,  you could also end up sounding  totally ridiculous. If you want to ask, Where is the bathroom, and you  go for a literal translation, youd ask,  Oà ¹ est la salle de bains? The problem is la salle de bains  is the room where the bath or shower is. Often the toilet  is  in a separate room. Imagine the puzzled look on your French hosts when they try to figure out why on earth you want to take a shower in their home. Ideally, if things are done properly, your hosts should have discreetly pointed out the bathroom after they took your coat and guided you into the house. Oà ¹ Sont  les Toilettes, S’il te  Plaà ®t? But if that didnt happen, the correct question would be,  Oà ¹ sont  les toilettes, s’il te  plaà ®t? if you are saying tu to your host. Note that the term les toilettes  referring to the bathroom is  always plural. You may also use the word les cabinets.  If you do, youd say, Oà ¹ sont les cabinets, sil te plaà ®t, but its a bit old-fashioned. If the evening is  super formal, you may say something like, Oà ¹ puis-je me rafraà ®chir? (Where may I freshen up?), but talking like that is quite snobbish. And anyway, everybody knows where youre going and what youll be doing once you get there. Also remember that we never say, â€Å"Take your time† in this kind of situation, which always makes me laugh.   At a Dinner Party, Be Discreet If youve gone to this house for a dinner party, keep in mind that you are not supposed to leave the dinner table...and dinner may last for hours. If you absolutely have to use the bathroom, time your exit well, for example, not just before a new course is brought in. It could be at the end of a course since the French dont remove the empty plates right away; just leave the table as discreetly as you can. You may say a soft, â€Å"Veuillez m’excuser† (Please excuse me), but its not at all necessary. And by all means, don’t say where youre going. Everybody knows. At a Restaurant or Cafà ©, Be Polite and Use Vous If youre in a restaurant or a cafà ©, its the same question. You will, of course, be using vous: Oà ¹ sont les toilettes, sil vous plaà ®t? In big cities, you often need to be a customer to use the restroom. If its a big Parisian cafà © with a terrace, walk in, look for the signs, and just go in. If its a smaller place, smile a lot and politely say: Excusez moi. Je suis vraiment dà ©solà ©e, mais est-ce que je peux utiliser vos toilettes, sil vous plaà ®t? Only in a very touristic place would you have a problem. Then, either order and pay for a coffee at the bar (even if you dont drink it) or go to the nearest public toilets. To navigate the niceties of French toilets youll need to learn how French toilets work. For instance, do you know what those weird buttons are on a French toilet?  And make sure you learn all you can about using a public toilet in France  to  avoid a nasty surprise!

Things Fall Apart (Literary Analysis) Free Essays

Things Fall Apart Literary Analysis Okonkwo and his father, Unoka, were two very different people. With just one wife and nothing to leave behind to his only son, Unoka was seen as a failure in the eyes of his village. Okonkwo, however, became a titled man with three wives and a successful harvest every season. We will write a custom essay sample on Things Fall Apart (Literary Analysis) or any similar topic only for you Order Now He was well respected in his community, despite his impulsive tendencies and rigidness. Although he despised Unoka, Okonkwo would not have grown to be the man that he did if it weren’t for his father. Okonkwo was aware of his father’s chronic laziness growing up and he knew firsthand the consequences of that kind of lifestyle. He learned from Unoka’s mistakes, and as an adult tried to become the opposite of him. â€Å"Okonkwo was ruled by one passion- to hate everything his father had loved. One of those things was gentleness and another was idleness. † He didn’t want to be judged based on the faults his father, and he proved that he was indeed everything Unoka was not: Strong, successful, determined and hardworking. Okonkwo also lived in perpetual fear of being perceived as weak, as his father had been. This fear drove him to do reckless things such as kill Ikemefuna, who had regarded Okonkwo as a father-figure. Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak. † Such impulsive actions proved him to be tough on the outside, but only weakened him on the inside. Okonkwo came to love Ikemefuna like a son, because he was much more like himself than his own biological son, Nwoye. However, he would never show his affection and later becam e deeply depressed by what he’d done. Nwoye, too, chose a very different path than his father. Okonkwo always thought Nwoye was lazy and feminine, much like Unoka. â€Å"‘†¦ I have done my best to make Nwoye grow into a man, but there is too much of his mother in him. ‘Too much of his grandfather,’ Obierika thought, but he did not say it. The same thought also came to Okonkwo’s mind. † Later in Nwoye’s life, he defied his father’s wishes and joined the Christian church. Upon hearing this news, Okonkwo disowned him as a son. I think this shows that how we’re raised greatly influences the people we become as adults. Okonkwo, who’s father didn’t have many expectations of him, created high expectations for himself. However, Nwoye failed to meet Okonkwo’s high standards and eventually gave up on trying to please him. How to cite Things Fall Apart (Literary Analysis), Papers

Discuss The Use Of Dramatic Irony Essay Example For Students

Discuss The Use Of Dramatic Irony Essay Discuss The Use Of Dramatic Irony Throughout The Play And How Priestley Uses It To Convey His Message Affectively To The Audience.  I am going to be discussing Priestleys use of dramatic irony and how this has helped him to achieve his goal. J B Priestleys goal was to tell us that we are all part of one body, this in the play is referred to as the social message. At the beginning of the play the family are enjoying Sheila and Geralds engagement, at the time the atmosphere was joyful. The Birlings and Gerald croft are in the upper class. Priestley made the atmosphere like a warm welcoming family. The play is about a family that contribute to the death of a young woman who commits suicide. Priestleys main aim is to tell us we are all part of one body. This means that we should look after each other the way that you would like to be treated. Priestley brings out his point by using dramatic irony. Dramatic irony is when the audience know more than all or most of the characters on stage. Dramatic irony is used well with all the characters, the reason to this is that the audience are watching the play years after it is set (1912) this means that the audience already know what had actually happened. Firstly there is mr Birling he makes several references to unemployment i.e., theres a lot of wild talk about possible labour trouble in the future, MR Birling says that they have passed the worst of all the trouble but the audience knows there was labour unrest and got worse in the 1920s. Mr Birling also states The Titanic sails next week, forty six thousand eight hundred tons, New York in five days every luxury and unsinkable, we know that the titanic sank in 1912 which makes the audience judge Mr Birling very early in the play. We also learn that the family are not close we know this because they keep secrets from each other i.e. Eric was drinking and Sheila never told her mother or father, when the topic of Eric is actually raised and Mrs Birling found out her son drinks she never wanted to hear a word about it. Eric doesnt tell his family about Eva smiths baby or about the money he stole until the inspector forced him to. Mr Birling is very concerned that there is no scandal going on otherwise his chances of having a knighthood would massively decrease. Mr Birling only cares about himself and his family. He doesnt care about the people around him. This brings me onto my next point, If Sheila hadnt gone to the manager of milwards and got Eva smith sacked then the whole mess wouldnt have started. But then Eric got Eva Smith pregnant, which meant that he had to now support her. Eric Stole money from Mr Birlings office and gave it so she had enough money to see her through. When Eva smith found out that she had been taking stolen money she refused to take any more of it. So she then went to Mrs Birlings committee but Mrs Birling Refused to support her because she had been lying about her identity. Mr Birling is a very selfish man he only thinks about himself and his family. Mr Birling tries to hide the truth but all is revealed by the inspector, as he knows all. When the inspector Questions the Birling household mr Birling tries to assert his authority over the inspector. We know that he will lose. The older generation (Mr and Mrs Birling) fail to notice the power of the inspector e.g. Mrs Birling tries to withhold information because shes not present at other interviews. This makes us think that Mrs Birling and her family do not share information. .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f , .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f .postImageUrl , .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f , .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f:hover , .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f:visited , .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f:active { border:0!important; } .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f:active , .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud2043ed959d2f6e07baabb121949606f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Booking letters EssayMr Birling shares information about his possible knighthood. As the play goes on it looks more like theres no chance of a knighthood. As we draw closer to the end of the play we believe that they will not get away with this. We know that they will not get away with this because Eva has committed suicide.  In conclusion I think that Priestley has used dramatic irony very well. I think that the whole Birling household is to blame for Evas death. I also think that when using dramatic irony it helps our understanding of the social message we are all part of one body means that we should look after each other the way we would like to be looked after. As a result of what happened to the Birlings and Eva this makes us see what Priestley is trying to get at. I think that the social message links to dramatic irony because it helps our understanding and helps us to get a clearer view of what happened.

Violence And Pornography Essays (4243 words) - Pornography

Violence And Pornography Violence and Pornography Pornography -- Sex or Subordination? In the late Seventies, America became shocked and outraged by the rape, mutilation, and murder of over a dozen young, beautiful girls. The man who committed these murders, Ted Bundy, was later apprehended and executed. During his detention in various penitentiaries, he was mentally probed and prodded by psychologist and psychoanalysts hoping to discover the root of his violent actions and sexual frustrations. Many theories arose in attempts to explain the motivational factors behind his murderous escapades. However, the strongest and most feasible of these theories came not from the psychologists, but from the man himself, as a teenager, my buddies and I would all sneak around and watch porn. As I grew older, I became more and more interested and involved in it, [pornography] became an obsession. I got so involved in it, I wanted to incorporate [porn] into my life, but I couldnt behave like that and maintain the success I had worked so hard for. I generated an alter-ego to fulfill my fantasies under-cover. Pornography was a means of unlocking the evil I had burried inside myself (Leidholdt 47). Is it possible that pornography is acting as the key to unlocking the evil in more unstable minds? According to Edward Donnerstein, a leading researcher in the pornography field, the relationship between sexually violent images in the media and subsequent aggression and . . . callous attitudes towards women is much stonger statistically than the relationship between smoking and cancer (Itzin 22). After considering the increase in rape and molestation, sexual harassment, and other sex crimes over the last few decades, and also the corresponding increase of business in the pornography industry, the link between violence and pornogrpahy needs considerable study and examination. Once the evidence you will encounter in this paper is evaluated and quantified, it will be hard not come away with the realization that habitual use of pornographic material promotes unrealistic and unattainable desires in men that can leac to violent behavior toward women. In order to properly discuss pornography, and be able to link it to violence, we must first come to a basic and agreeable understanding of what the word pornography means. The term pornogrpahy originates from two greek words, porne, which means harlot, and graphein, which means to write (Websters 286). My belief is that the combination of the two words was originally meant to describe, in literature, the sexual escapades of women deemed to be whores. As time has passed, this definition of pornography has grown to include any and all obscene literature and pictures. At the present date, the term is basically a blanket which covers all types of material such as explicit literature, photography, films, and video tapes with varying degrees of sexual content. For Catherine Itzins research purposes pornogrpahy has been divided into three categories: The sexually explicit and violent; the sexually explicit and nonviolent, but subordinating and dehumanizing; and the sexually explicit, nonviolent, and nonsubordinating that is based upon mutuality. The sexually explicit and violent is graphic, showing penetration and ejaculation. Also, it shows the violent act toward a woman. The second example shows the graphic sexual act and climax, but not a violent act. This example shows the woman being dressed is a costume or being talked down to in order to reduce her to something not human; such as a body part or just something to have sex with, a body opening or an orifice. Not only does erotica show the entire graphic sexual act, it also depicts an attraction between two people. Her research consistently shows that harmful effects are associated with the first two, but that the third erotica, is harmless (22). These three categories basically exist as tools of discerning content. Although sometimes they overlap without a true distinction, as in when the film is graphic in the sexual act and also in violence, but shows the act as being a mutual activity between the people participating. In my view, to further divide pornography, it is possible to break it down into even simpler categories: soft and hard core pornography. Hard core pornography is a combination of the sexually explicit and violent and the sexually explicit and nonviolent, but subordinating and dehumanizing categories, previously discussed. Soft core pornography is thought to be harmless and falls into the category known as erotica; which is the category based on mutuality. In hard core pornogrpahy, commonly rated XXX, you can see graphic depictions of violent sexual acts usually with a man or group of men, deriving sexual gratification

buy custom Health Policy essay

buy custom Health Policy essay Women are believed to be major beneficiaries of health care since they encounter more health problems in every stage of their lives than men. They also encounter health emergencies since most of them face certain circumstances such as rape, pregnancy, and various health issues. However, most of them have no access to health services (Kaiser, 2012). This is why there is a need for a considerable health policy that will take care of their health problems. This health policy will address women with three categories of health problems; these include pregnancy services, women that have been subjected to rape, and other health issues of women, such as common diseases and domestic abuse. Pregnant women often have difficulties when accessing pre-natal and post-natal services. This policy will suggest that women pay a maximum of 10% on health services depending on their marital status. Women with no marriage partners will pay a total of 5% while women with marital partners will incur a total of 10%. These funds will cater for the needs of women during pregnancy, delivery, and even after the pregnancy period. On matters of rape, emphasis will be laid on individuals responsible for this type of sexual abuse. The government will cater for instant health attention after a rape case. Women will receive medical attention, and such includes abortion services if any is needed. The rapist will be forced to account for most of the health funds. The go vernment, in corporation with health centres and other charitable organization, will be charged with the responsibility of ensuring that women who have been raped access guidance and counselling services. In view to other health services, such as medical attention on victims of domestic violence and other health needs, this policy requires that these women provide a fee of a total of 20% annually. There will be no taxes that are going to be charged on all the medical coverage. In demanding the funds for these types of medical cover, the government will consider the economic capabilities of these women. One of the major aspects this policy suggests is the need for health education among women (Garcia et al, 2010). This is important because it equips them with knowledge on how to access healthcare, where to access it, and how their funds are distributed and utilized to care for their health. Women are the major caretakers of homes and they also form an important part of the economic productivity in the country. Therefore, their health is paramount among other issues in the country. The government should make more preparations to ensure that they formulate more constructive health polici es which will ensure that women do access quality and affordable health care.
