Pollution prevention Essay Example for Free
Pollution prevention Essay The article written by Chris Wiant ââ¬Å"What is the P2 trend all about, and how are environmental health professionals involved?â⬠discusses the history, objectives and significance of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agencyââ¬â¢s pollution prevention (P2) program to the environment and public health. In the early 70s, there was already a conscious effort in protecting the nationââ¬â¢s vital natural resources which was pioneered by Congress. But EPA wanted to expand their strategy in environmental protection which resulted in the birth of the P2 program. The main thrust of the pollution prevention program is to encourage companies to get involved in the community level by taking the initiative in becoming leaders in protecting the environment. In addition, the application of the program has facilitated the identification of its ââ¬Å"potential for significant economic benefits by avoiding the need for treatment at the end-of-the-pipe.â⬠Since P2 has been well received by businesses and its positive benefits are eminent, the next challenge is ââ¬Å"how to institutionalize P2 as a standard business practice, and 2) how to get businesses and communities to see that P2 can be a pathway to a new partnership between themâ⬠(Wiant, 1997, p. 24). Moreover, the pollution prevention program is not only a directive that is focused on conservation and preservation of the natural resources. It is more directed at the sustainable maintenance of the activities that were already started by companies and the EPA but in a larger scale. Th e certainty of the success of the program can only be guaranteed if all sectors of the society work hand in hand in order to achieve a single goal which is to reduce the damage inflicted to the environment. Another aspect of the P2 program that is very appealing is its emphasis on preventive measures. Its design of ââ¬Å"reducing the emission of toxic Pollution Prevention 2à substances into the environment, focusing on the manufacturing process as the point in which to control toxin emissionsâ⬠is an innovative idea that will dramatically trim down the production of harmful substances. Through this approach a potential problem can be addressed to its initial stage. Instead of using the end-of-the-pipe strategy, businesses can already start with prevention during the manufacturing process. As a result, massive damages toà the environment can be avoided and it can also eliminate the risk of inflicting impairment to the publicââ¬â¢s health. Also, it can significantly reduce the cost for businesses in decreasing their toxic emissions. It is like shooting 2 birds in 1 stone because companies can save a lot of money and time by just implementing the P2 program in their business p rocedures. By mandating business to utilize the P2 program, changes in common business practices will occur. But this alteration would be for the overall improvement of the policies and procedures of a company. Moreover, in a community that practices such programs, the quality of life of the people will greatly improve and the relationship of coexistence between man and nature will continue to flourish for the better (Wiant, 1997, p. 24)â⬠¦ â⬠¦ Works Cited Wiant, C. J. (1997). What is the P2 trend all about, and how are environmental health professionals involved?. Journal of Environmental Health, 59, 24.

Health Promotion Essay
Health Promotion Essay This written rationale will identify and explain the necessity for the promotion of public health and physical activity. It will demonstrate an understanding of the role, function and settings of public health and physical activity promotion by national, regional and local agencies. It will also analyse and evaluate the health related models and approaches to public health and physical activity promotion. What is Health? There are many definitions for Health. Health means different things to different people, if someone doesnt drink and smoke then they believe that they are healthy, or if they eat a good balanced diet for example. The main most known definition of health is from the World Health Organization. World Health Organisation states: Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Health is a dynamic condition resulting from a bodys constant adjustment and adaptation in response to stresses and changes in the environment for maintaining an inner equilibrium called homeostasis. World Health Organisation (2003) This definition however has not been amended since 1948. What is Health Promotion? Health promotion involves doing things to prevent disease and to improve individual and communities health. Health promotion offers solutions to many of the health problems facing society such as obesity, lack of exercise and smoking though developing skills and knowledge, community action, supportive environments, healthy public policy and health services. Health promotion helps individuals or communities to increase control over and improve their health and wellbeing. Curtin University (2012) states that with a significant proportion of ill-health related to choices about nutrition, exercise, the use of legal and illegal substances, interpersonal relationships and other social behaviours, health promotion can help us make choices that support well-being. The features of health promotion are that it is based on a holistic view of health; it uses participatory approaches it focuses on the determinants and addressing of health not just health problems and conditions. These include the social, behavioural, environmental and economic conditions that are the root cause of poor health, wellbeing and illness such as education, income, employment, working conditions, social status. Health promotion builds on existing strengths and assets and it uses multiple, complementary strategies to promote health for the individual, community and population level. Why is health promotion needed? There are fears that the recent generation and their childrens generation will age less successfully than the current older one no surprise given that, although rates of cigarette smoking are falling, more people are drinking heavily, only a minority of adults exercise often enough to maintain good health and obesity rates have greatly increased over the last 20 years. Obesity is a main health issue which can lead to other health problems such as diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, joint pain, Nursing Times (2009) states that these health issues can be prevented or delayed by lifestyle measures. A health promotion package would enable adults of all ages to lead happier and healthier lives. Around two-thirds of the England population are overweight or obese. Obesity has grown by almost 400% in the last 25 years and on present trends will soon surpass smoking as the greatest cause of premature loss of life. (NHS Dudley, 2012) Obesity is associated with many health problems including coronary heart disease, diabetes, kidney failure, osteoarthritis, back pain and psychological damage. The strong association between obesity and cancer has only recently come to light. (Dodds, 2009) Dodds (2009) estimates the economic costs of obesity conservatively at à £3.3-3.7 billion per year and of obesity plus overweight at à £6.6-7.4 billion. Health promotion for obesity is especially important because it can help lower the risks of many other health conditions which then cuts down the economic costs in the future by educating people about the correct food and exercise and also behaviour change techniques. Why do we need to Promote Mental Health? Mental health promotion does remain the most underdeveloped area of health promotion even though there is an increasing recognition that there is no health without mental health Christodoul (2009). Positive mental health involves self-esteem, being able to solve problems and the ability to adapt to stress. The need for positive mental health promotion is beneficial and relevant for everyone. It is important to stress to policy makers and professionals to understand that mental health and mental wellbeing are issues of everyday life. Therefore positive mental health demands the co-ordinated action by all concerned; through the media, the government, local authorities, industry, voluntary organisation and through health and social and economic sectors. Most of the time when people think of mental health they look at it in a negative way, however it could be argued that this is not the case. Mental health is not just the absence of mental illness. It is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. (Mental Health Ireland 2013) Mental Health is about how people feel about themselves, how they feel about others and how they are able to meet the demands of life. à Mental health promotion is important because mental health contributes to all aspects of human life, it has important, less important and essential values for the individual, society and culture. Mental health has a shared relationship with the wellbeing and productivity of a society and its members. Mental health is essential for the wellbeing and functioning of all individuals. Mental health is essential for the well-being and functioning of individuals. Good mental health is an important resource for individuals, families, communities, and nations. Mental health, as an indivisible part of general health, contributes to the functions of society, and has an effect on overall productivity. Mental health concerns everyone as it is generated in our everyday lives in homes, schools, workplaces, and in leisure activities. Positive mental health contributes to the social, human, and economic capital of every society. Spirituality it can make a significant contribution to mental health promotion and mental health influences spiritual life. (World Health Organization, p.21 2004) Mental health can be regarded as an individual resource, which contributes to a persons quality of life; an aspect of good mental health is the capacity for mutually satisfying and enduring relationships. The role of Health Promotion. Health Promotion staff work at numerous different levels from working with groups and communities, face to face contact with individuals, to more strategic work such as policy development. Working as a health promotion specialist is much more than persuading and advising individuals to make lifestyle changes, it also includes the following: Project management- this involves managing particular health promotion projects to make sure they are delivered to a high standard, effective and that they are ethical. Personal development developing personal, emotional and social skills and abilities of everyone to give them the opportunity to maximise their health and build a health promoting attitude to use for those around them. Community development encouraging and developing communities to become healthier such as neighbourhoods, cultural communities and communities of interest. Organisational development encouraging organisations to become more health promoting such as schools, work places and hospitals. Partnership development building partnerships with key people, communities and organisations who can influence health promotion and to help partnerships to be better educated to promote health. Health information developing ways of providing the correct information about peoples health, what social and behavioural factors can affect their health and what can be done to improve their health. Strategy Development developing a planned approach to improving health and to make sure that local, regional and national polices that could affect the publics health do so in a health promoting way. (NHS careers, 2012) Health promotion specialists also work in a range of different settings and locations such as sport and fitness centres, communities, health centres, local authority buildings, hospitals, offices and schools. National Health Promotion National health promotion includes many different programmes and schemes backed by the government the NHS, the Department of Health and some charities. Some are list below: Change 4 life this involves eat well, move more, live longer government campaign. This involves a website. NHS Life Check- this is a free online service from the NHS that asks people a series of questions about their lifestyle and gives them personalised results. (Patient.co.uk 2012) Regional Health Promotion Derbyshire Derbyshire health promotion service offers a range of free health and well-being programs, advice and support to the local community and businesses of Derbyshire. All programs are run and delivered by health specialists. Some of the health promotion programs are listed below: Waist Wise this is a weight management program with separate courses for men and women Derbyshire Stop Smoking Service this is a specialist support program to help people quit smoking. Health Referral Program this is an exercise and activity scheme for individuals who want to improve their health by becoming more active. Children and Young Peoples Health Promotion Program this is a local program to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people in Derbyshire. Working Well this involves a range of programs to help local businesses to improve the health, well-being and safety of their workforce and work place. Living with Long-term Conditions Program- this is a self-management program to help people with long-term conditions to improve their health and well-being. Marketing and Resource Service this is a range of health and well-being marketing resources for use in the community and education projects (Derbyshire Community Health Service, 2012) It is essential that Derbyshire are working on tackling obesity by using health promotion as National Obesity Surgery Centre (2010) states that Obesity has hit an all time high in Derbyshire withà 25% of peopleà now in this category. Health officials said this cost the NHS à £7m moreà in 2009 than in 2008. As obesity increases millions more will be spent each year. In 2008 89 people in Derbyshire had weight loss surgery such as gastric banding. Female patients outnumbered males, with 75 women receiving gastric bands compared to 14 men. Overall there were only slightly more obese women than men. 72,000 women compared to 70,000 men. The figures have been revealed after statistics showed that eight times more people in England have been admitted to hospital due to obesity than ten years ago. (National Obesity Surgery Centre 2010) This is just another set of statistics highlighting the problem of obesity is on the increase and is in desperate need of tackling. This is why Health Promotion is crucial in areas of the world. Local Health Promotion Chesterfield The health of the community in Chesterfield in general is wore than the England average, there are health issues within Chesterfield which are by gender, level of deprivation and ethnicity. Almost seven out of ten local people describe their health as good/very good, which is said to be low compared with others. Chesterfield also has a high rate of teenage pregnancies and alcohol related admissions to hospital. More people in Chesterfield are admitted to hospital for alcohol related harm than anywhere else in Derbyshire and the rate is higher than the national average.à (Chesterfield Borough Council, 2009) Chesterfield is currently focusing and providing opportunities for young people to take part in activities. Queens Park Sports Centre has a synthetic pitch and provides free use for supervised activities for 10 hours each week. There is a health programme called swim free which means under 16s can swim for free, also the new Healthy Living Centre at Staveley is now open. The Council also won funding to develop play facilities in the deprived area of Barrow Hill in Chesterfield. Chesterfield Borough Council (2012) reports that Last year, the number of children taking part in sports development activity increased from 1,255 to 1,541. These activities of health promotion are decreasing the chances of obesity by providing physical activity activities which is crucial when trying to loose or maintain a correct body weight. Strengths and Weaknesses of Health Promotion Weaknesses Issues relating to funding and lack of resources are a major problem when coming to health promotion. Lack of staffing funding issues Losing out to direct care health promotion being seen as not important so staff such as nurses will be dealing with health promotion on top of dealing with direct care of patients. Lack of understanding of health promotion Godden (2008) states that staff and management can sometimes be identified as lacking in understanding of health promotion. Godden also found that a lack of skills and knowledge amongst staff as a weakness and several members of staff at the NHS suggested that there was an unjustified assumption that anyone can just do health promotion without appropriate training. Some sectors do not understand or recognise health promotion and neither does the community. Strengths Cutting down cost for the economy by tackling health problems such as obesity, cardiovascular disease and cancer Community togetherness getting together as groups in the community Making new friends Cut down levels of depression with health promotion based on physical activity à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬Å" physical activity decreases the symptoms of depression. Physical activity releases endorphins, which may improve an individuals mood, exercise the immune systems chemicals that increases depression, due to body temperature increasing during exercise this produces a calming effect. Exercise also increases confidence and helps distractions of negative thoughts. Exercising may offer more opportunities to socialize and offers people a healthy way to cope with depression. Morin (2011) states that 33 percent of adults do not engage in any form of leisure time physical activity. Increasing physical activity improves depression. This is why health promotion for exercise is beneficial for everyone and will cut down the cost on the NHS prescriptions of antidepressants Behavioural Modifications in Health Promotion There many theories and models that are used in Health Promotion, however it depends what the focus of change of behaviour that is being worked out. For tackling obesity and to promote healthy eating the following theories may be found helpful. The stages of change model would assess the readiness of the community to change Learning theory, diffusion of innovations theory and communication theory would inform behavioural interventions to help people to make healthy food choices Community development theory would help in enabling the community to address barriers to having a healthy diet (for example through setting up a food co-operative) Policy theory would help with how to influence political processes (e.g. getting the council to set aside land for allotments). The Health Belief Model can also play a good role in health promotion. This model predicts and explains the health behaviours people decide to undertake, the Health Belief Model supposes that a person believes they can avoid a negative condition such as obesity, that an individual will expect positive results if they take recommended actions to avoid negative health conditions and that people believe that they can successfully take recommended health steps towards leading a positive healthy life. This model will also assist towards cutting costs on the NHS for all types of health problems. (Kansas State University College of Human Ecology, 2006) Is Health Promotion a good thing? Health Promotion is Prevention. Health Promotion is the practice of preventing disease and promoting good health within groups of people, from small communities to entire countries. Yes, Health Promotion is a good thing because it saves money and improves peoples quality of Life. If a community is healthy then it is spending less money on health care; meaning better economic productivity and improved quality of life for everybody. Health Promotion doesnt only help the adult population but it also helps children thrive. If a child is healthy then it will grow up to be a healthy adult, a healthy child attends school more often and performs better as a whole meaning they will be educated on health and fitness and hopefully carry it on through to their children too.
Intersectionality in Third-wave Feminism
Intersectionality in Third-wave Feminism Intersectionality as the Main Concept of Third-wave Feminism Third-wave feminism which follows Second-wave of Feminist movement began in the 1990s with the mixture of disgruntled, and unsure feminists, and feminists born into the world where feminism had already existed. The movement of third-wave feminism has a little focus on laws or political processes, but more on a personââ¬â¢s identity. This wave of feminism is the most diverse and individualistic feminist wave society have ever seen. It is considered to be a worldwide feminist wave because its main idea is to show the world that women are of many colors, religions, ethnicities, and cultural backgrounds. First two waves of feminism have made so many changes in different aspects of our life. Besides the right to vote, the right to get an education, and the right to work, women, who lived during third wave of feminist, required to change the stereotypes and language that was used to describe a woman. Third-wave feminists had a desire to challenge or avoid the assumption that there is a universal female identity and over-emphasizing of the experience of the upper-middle class white women. What is most important is that the roots of Intersectional Feminism were born together with third-wave feminism. ââ¬Å"Intersectional feminism is much more than the Feminism itself because it is an understanding of how womenââ¬â¢s overlapping identities- including race, class ethnicity, and sexual orientation- impact the way they experience oppression and discrimination.â⬠(Dastagir) Rebecca Solnit is an author of the book ââ¬ËMen explain things to meââ¬â¢ who touches the problem of marginalizing women by silencing them and talks about consequences that can lead female because of this issue. She ends on a serious note- because the ultimate problem is the silencing of women who have something to say, including those saying things like, ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s trying to kill me!â⬠(Solnit) Rebecca Solnit states that ââ¬Å"men explain things to me, and other women, whether or not they know what theyââ¬â¢re talking about.â⬠It is a presumption that makes it hard, at times, for any woman in any field: that keeps women from speaking up and from being heard when they dare; that crushes young women into silence by indicating, the way harassment on the street does, that this is not their world. ââ¬Å"It trains us in self-doubt and self-limitation just as it exercises menââ¬â¢s unsupported overconfidence.â⬠(Solnit) Violence is one way to silence pe ople, to deny their voice and their credibility, to assert womenââ¬â¢s right to control over their right to exist. Rebecca Solnit says that things gotten better today compared to what was happening 30 years ago. ââ¬Å"This war wonââ¬â¢t end in my lifetime. I am still fighting it, for myself certainly, but also for all those younger women who have something to say, in the hope that they will get to say it.â⬠(Solnit) Third Wave feminism is a feminist wave that attends to deal with race, racism, and the experience of nonwhite women who do not free equal in our society. Intersectionality, therefore, has an intense focus on identity and particularly on racial and ethnic identity. The common positions are ââ¬Å"We are here for women of color, trans people, lesbian, gay and bi people and the differently abledâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Listen to women, listen to people of color.â⬠(Pluckrose)A big issue is that intersectionality becomes inaccessible to even more people. As Mariana Ortega mentions in her article ââ¬Å"White Feminism and Women of Colorâ⬠the list of respected women of color is so short. In her essay, she tries to figure out the reason of intersectionality, asking so many questions, such as ââ¬Å"Why is it that feminists still scramble to fill out the spot for the respected, well-known woman-of-color, speaker that will bring in a crowd? Why is it that there is only a small percentage of books and articles written by women of color in the growing lists of feminist publications? Why is it that I or any of the few women of color who are involved in feminist work could write lists of all the experiences that make us invisible, misunderstood, homogenized, and victimized while dealing with white feminists.â⬠(Ortega) Women of color are marginalized in many ways and different aspects. To be intersectional is to focus on many different categories of marginalized identity at once, be convinced that they are marginalized and be concerned about them all. To expand this statement more, ââ¬Å"marginalizeâ⬠means to push people to the edge of the society not allowing them a place within it. A society that labels an outside the norm- weird, scary, hateful, or useless- marginalize those people, edging them out. Women of color are great example of marginalized people who are pushed away from the rest of society, are oppressed, and discriminated just because of their color, race, religion, and other factors. White Feminism is used to describe the feminist movement that only focuses on white and straight women. Usually, their fight focuses on rape culture, equal pay, and diminishing patriarchy. White feminists have reached success in different aspects for white women, but what about women of color? It is still problematic because white feminists refuse to accept women of color, women with disabilities, and women who are not in a good body form. As a matter of fact, they used to ignore their issues and their identities as well. Although they are trying to close the wage gap between men and women, they do not recognize that Latina and Black women earn even less than white women do. Gloria Steinem is a famous American Feminist, who became nationally recognized as a leader and a spokeswoman for the feminist movement in the late 1960s. Steinem does not recognize such thing as ââ¬Å"White Feminismâ⬠. She was adamant about the fact that ââ¬Å"white feminismâ⬠as a term has no discourse about gender inequality. (Zarya) As Steinem mentioned in one of her interviews, ââ¬Å"there is no such thing as white feminism. If you call it white, itââ¬â¢s not feminism. It either includes all women, or itââ¬â¢s not feminismâ⬠, she said. (Zarya) We are not allowed to forget that basically black women were the major force of the feminist movement, particularly during the 1970s. For this reason, and many others, white feminism has no place in current society and should be eliminated as soon as possible. In the face of calls for a more intersectional feminism, there are even White feminists who claim the whole concept of intersectionality is just academic jargon that doesnââ¬â¢t connect with the real world. Many people do not really understand what is ââ¬Å"White Feminismâ⬠.à Everyday feminism Magazine defines ââ¬Å"White Feminismâ⬠as a set of beliefs that allows for the exclusion of issues that specifically affect women of color. It is ââ¬Ëone size-fits allââ¬â¢ feminism, where middle class White women are the mold that others must fit. It is a method of practicing feminism, not an indictment of every individual White feminism, everywhere, always.â⬠(Uwujaren) White Feminism marginalize women of color that causes them to variety of negative effects. For example, White Feminism refuses to give feminists of color an ability to discuss their biggest issue, such as racial inequality which relates to gender inequality. It keeps reminding society that beauty standard in our culture is to be thin, blonde, and white. In addition of excluding women of color, it excludes women who are not straight or well-built as well.à White Feminists are also known as women of privilege in our society. Big issue is that sometimes they donââ¬â¢t even realize that they are excluding other marginalized groups. This is not an excuse for their behavior. Everyone should agree that it is a chance for women of color to honestly tell feminists of privilege how their lack of self-awareness affects other women, such as Black or Latin women. Existing problem could be changed by helping each other to recognize that women of different races, sexual orientations, and economic class experience gender inequality differently. People should be recognized and acknowledged according to their skills, knowledges, contributions, and talents, not according to their sex, skin color, or appearance. Everyone can become a better feminist if he will change this point in his head and mind. Maria Lugones is an Argentine feminist philosopher, also an author of Peregrinajes/Pilgrimages: Theorizing Coalition Against Multiple Oppressions book where she is taking readers through her understanding of white/Angla feminist theories, and is trying to answer the question: What is the ââ¬Å"problem of differenceâ⬠between white women and women of color, and how does the ââ¬Å"problem of differenceâ⬠affect non-white female? Lugones states that ââ¬Å"women of color always knew that white women and women of color were different; white women all knew that they were different from women of color. White women never considered the difference important, because they did not really notice us.â⬠(Lugones) White women used to simple and straightforwardly ignore the difference. But U.S. women of color heard and uttered an attack on white racism. Racist feminism does not see the violence done to women of color by denying that they are women. In her essay, Lugones compares women of color to the beings with a peculiar lack of substance or lack of credibility, or too frightening and intimidating, too dramatic, with too much or too little authority: all out of proportion, not fully real. (Lungones) Third wave feminism respects not only differences between women based on race, color, religion, and economic standing, but also makes allowance for different identities within a single person. Third-wave feminism responds to the ââ¬Å"category of womenâ⬠debates of the late 1980s and early 1990s that began with a critique of the second wave contention that women share something in common as women: a common gender identity and set of experiences. The concept of ââ¬Å"womanâ⬠and ââ¬Å"experiencesâ⬠are closely connected within the second and, along with personal politics, form the three core concepts of that movement. Third-wave feminists rightly reject the universalist claim that all women share a set of common experiences, but they do not discard the concept of experience altogether. Women still look to personal experiences to provide knowledge about how the world operates and trouble dominant narratives about how things should be.à Many third-wave stories striv e to demonstrate the gaps between dominant discourses and the reality of womenââ¬â¢s lives. Some third-wavers use their own experiences growing up in interracial or multicultural families to illustrate how the politics of race, class, and gender play out in peopleââ¬â¢s lives. For example, Cristina Tzintzuââ¬â¢n writes, ââ¬Å"I worry about dating whites, especially white menâ⬠¦I see what a white man did to my beautiful, brown, Mexican mother. He colonized her.â⬠(Snyder) What Snyder states in his essay has direct connection with Rebecca Solnitââ¬â¢s book which also raises the problem of marginalized women and menââ¬â¢s unfair attitude to women. Both first and second-wave feminists have made huge contributions to the history of feminist movement but for third-wavers there were still lots of things to do and improve. Even though many laws were designed to protect women from rape, sexual harassment, gender discrimination, wage disparity, domestic violence, and other atrocities, women were still marginalized in the way of silencing. The ultimate problem that was present during third-wave feminism is silencing of women who have something to say. Womenââ¬â¢s voices are as multiple and diverse as our cultural and personal histories, the meaning of silence- being unwilling or unable to speak- can be seen as the complex of issues for women that results in different negative concepts. Anthropologist Susan Gal points out that womenââ¬â¢s historians, similarly, have justified their work on the basis of recapturing the ââ¬Å"silenceâ⬠past: In this writing, silence is generally deploredâ⬠as ââ¬Å"a symbol of passivity and powerlessness: those who are denied speech cannot make their experience known and thus cannot influence the course of their lives or history.â⬠(Mahoney) Feeling unable or unwilling to speak, and feeling bad about it, conveys the expectation that silence is the sign of inauthenticity, of failure to be a ââ¬Å"realâ⬠. The Moor in the Works of William Shakespeare Essay -- Biography Biogra
The Sources and Representations of the Moor in the Works of Shakespeare à à à à One theme consistently reemployed throughout Shakespeare's plays is that of the Other. The Other is usually characterized as a character that is somehow separated, stigmatized, or noted as being different from the mainstream ideal. For the Elizabethan England of Shakespeare's time, it may have been a self-defensive maneuver against the encroachment of something which threatened too close to home (Bartels 450). Bryant lists several methods used to employ this convention of the Other: race such as that of Shylock and Aaron, nationality as in Iachimo, bastardy such as the characters Don John and Edmund, social status such as that belonging to Iago, and deformity, for example, Richard III (35). Not every Other is characterized as evil, but nonetheless depicted as being somehow different or separated from society. Characters such as Malvolio, Faulconbridge, Macbeth, and Othello are of this subdivision. à à One sect of Otherness is that of race. During this time, England seems at first glance to be separated culturally from any area of the Ottoman Empire. However, this assumption proves to be false. There are four characters in Shakespeare's plays, Caliban, Othello, the Prince of Morocco, and Aaron, who are of distinctly African, or Moorish heritage. Whether these persons were of Negro, Berber, Spanish, or Arab descent is definitely in question. The use of the term Moor also is of importance. This word is used to describe Aaron and Othello, but not to describe Caliban or the Prince of Morocco, both who come from areas classically referred to as being Moorish. The origin of the word Moor comes from the word mauri. Mauri refers to the Berbers w... ...ntic Review. 55.4 (1990): 1-17. Bryant, J.A. Jr. "Aaron and the Pattern of Shakespeare's Villains." Changes in Air Travel Essay -- Logistics
INTRODUCTION The terrorist attack of Sept 11, 2001 significantly changed the landscape of air travel. Congress put in place mandates to screen all checked baggage and improve passenger screening procedures. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was chartered to oversee these changes. The major obstacle was old antiquated equipment that was unable to handle the demand which resulted in a significant delay in time it took to process passengers. With the recovery of the airline industry since the attack the challenge is how passengers move through the airport quickly and efficiently. Through the history of air travel there have been many initiatives attempted to improve the passenger experience. The three I will focus on are the mobile lounge concept implemented in 1962 with the opening of Dulles , and the newer concept of Fast Travel initiated by the International Air Transportation Association (IATA) and the so called ââ¬Å"security checkpoint of the futureâ⬠also being tested by IATA (Engle, 2011). On the surface the mobile lounges seemed like a solid principle. It kept walking required by the passenger to a minimum as parking and passenger processing facilities were close in proximity. In theory if expansion due to additional aircraft was required you would only need to add additional mobile lounges to support the demand (Young & Wells, 2011). When Dulles International Airport opened in 1962 it was at the cutting edge of technology. It was the first airport with separate buildings to handle people and airplanes. Your processed in the main terminal and then walked to the mobile lounges which could serve as holding rooms or used to transport passengers directly to the aircraft. As the amount of people an... ... the experience much more enjoyable. The so called ââ¬Å"security checkpoint of the futureâ⬠(Engle, 2011) being developed and tested by IATA could make for an exciting passenger experience. In light of security concerns it could be a few years before we something to this effect in our airports. Works Cited IATA awards Abu Dhabi International Airport for Fast Travel. (2011, December 26).
